Our “Dreamers” Architectural Committee worked with an architect, Jim Riddle, on building renovations with special attention given to the physically challenged. The goal was to improve restroom access, and accessibility between the upper and lower levels of the church building. Plans included expanding the Jean Harrell Fellowship Hall and kitchen, and improving office and meeting space.
Mr. Riddle met with the entire congregation on Sunday, March 4, 2018 after the Holy Eucharist to propose a preliminary concept design. The design emphasized ACCESSIBILITY for the physically challenged by expanding the narthex. This included adding restrooms on the sanctuary level, and an elevator to link both building levels. Other improvements proposed include a building expansion in the rear (east side) of the church to allow for rearrangements and more floor space for the fellowship hall, kitchen, offices, and food pantry.
With some modifications to reduce cost, the initial preliminary proposal appeared to be achievable. MR. RIDDLE PRESENTED THOSE MODIFICATIONS TO THE COMMITTEE ON MAY 21, 2018. Feedback was offered to him so that he could tweak and re-price. A follow-up Committee meeting was held with Jim on June 19, 2018 to wrap-up plans in preparation to present a proposal to the Diocese Standing Committee. On June 28, 2018, we pitched our proposal. Jim Riddle and our Committee fielded several questions regarding renovations, current operations, and the future mission of the parish. Bishop Smith was also present. Hopefully, a recommendation will be made to the Diocesan Council to help us fund the project.
A final proposal will have to be approved by the Diocese Council and our congregation before moving forward. Church financial records from All Saints and from Ascension were combined effective January 1, 2019. The combined records are in the process of being reviewed and audited for submittal to the Diocese. Approvals, financing, and detailed planning could take from several months before construction can begin. Construction could take up to another 6 months once funding approved. If everything goes well, some significant renovation will be completed in 2020.
The following are the architectural sketches of renovations presented to the Architectural Committee on May 21, 2018:
